Your Scar Healed. So Why Does It Still Hurt?

What every woman should know about scar tissue, pain, and feeling at home in her body again.

Maybe it's a tight pull across your chest when you reach for the top shelf. A low back that aches no matter how much you stretch. A shoulder that hasn't felt "right" since your surgery. Pelvic pressure, hip pain or a belly that feels disconnected since your C-section.

You've been told you're healed. The incision looks fine. But your body is still telling you something is off.

You're not imagining it. And you're not alone.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors and the strength it takes to heal. Part of that healing is feeling at home in your body again, and scar tissue is often the piece that gets overlooked.

Scars go deeper than the skin

Every surgery, injury or procedure leaves scar tissue. On the outside it may be a thin line. Underneath, scar tissue can stick to muscles and the thin wrapping around them, like glue on the layers of an onion.

That "glue" changes how you move. Your brain notices a muscle isn't working well near the scar, so it quietly recruits other muscles to do the job. Over months and years, those helper muscles get overworked, tight and sore.

That's why the pain often shows up far from the scar itself.

How scar tissue causes pain in other areas of the body

Procedures that commonly leave lingering pain

Surgeries that often leave lingering scar tissue pain

  • Mastectomy, lumpectomy, breast reconstruction or implants

  • Radiation to the chest or underarm

  • Port placement

  • C-section, hysterectomy or laparoscopic surgery

  • Abdominal, hernia or appendix surgery

  • Joint surgeries: knee, hip, shoulder

For breast cancer survivors, this is especially common. Tightness across the chest, neck and shoulder pain, limited reach and rounded posture are things many women live with long after treatment ends.

Why the usual fixes don't last

Most approaches go straight to where it hurts. Stretch the tight muscle. Massage the sore spot. Take something for the pain. It feels better for a day or two, then comes right back.

That's because the sore muscle is usually the one working overtime. The real problem is the muscle that stopped doing its job, and the scar that's in the way. Until the brain and body are retrained, the pattern repeats.

How Buff'd Wellness treats pain differently

Assess, Treat, Integrate: 3 steps to chronic pain relief

I use a precise, gentle method that works with your nervous system to find the root of the pain, not just the spot that hurts. It's just three steps:

  1. Assess. Simple muscle tests show which muscles are overworking and which have "gone quiet," and whether a scar is part of the story.

  2. Treat. I release the overworked muscles and the scar tissue, then wake up the muscles that stopped firing. You'll often feel the difference on the table.

  3. Integrate. You leave with a few easy corrective exercises that lock in the new pattern, so your body remembers how to move without pain.

This isn't about pushing through pain or hours of exercise. It's about teaching your body to work the way it was designed to.

What clients notice

  • Reaching overhead without a pull

  • Less neck, shoulder and back pain

  • Standing taller, breathing deeper

  • Feeling connected to their body again

A note for the men reading

Men have scars too: knees, shoulders, hernias, old sports injuries. If that's you, this can help. And if there's a woman in your life who's been through breast cancer, a C-section or surgery, share this with her. It may be the answer she's been looking for.

Is it safe after breast cancer?

Scar work begins once your incisions are fully closed and your medical team gives the okay. Every session is gentle and adjusted to where you are in recovery. Always check with your physician first.
